Radio button – tuned in
What I’d use to turn Vanessa Feltz off. What multimedia designers use to allow you to select an option on-screen.
RAM – what ewe want
Random Access Memory really speeds things up in that cursed box you’re so dependent upon. Without it you wouldn’t be able to zip around accessing data stored all over your hard drive in any random order without grinding to a complete standstill. Damned useful.
Raster – picture dreadlocks
In its root form it’s the rectangular area of your display screen. Designers have to grapple with the fact though that a raster graphic, being made up of individual pixels (bit-mapped), tends to become very jagged when enlarged. Vector graphics don’t. Pass it on.
Rollout – pub closing
Continue with a campaign by extending its perameters in time and or reach.
ROM – mel, the desert rats' quarry
Read Only Memory. Once written to can’t be overwritten, as per your CD-ROM. At my age, a bit like my memory.
Real time – so it must be
Unlike unreal time, which of course simply doesn’t exist. things done in real time means that the action happens immediately and you don't have to wait.
Refresh rate – just how fast can you pour that coffee?
Number of times every second that the image on your screen is redrawn. Number of times in the pub that your glass is refilled, which if you’ve got friends like mine is way too frequently.
Rendering – making your walls look better
The cause of extreme despair in a multimedia designer’s studio when a computer crashes just minutes from the end of a really heavy render that was started the night before the night before. The infilling with colouring and shading of a graphic object so that it looks solid and real.
Root directory – horticultural tome
The topmost of all the directories in your disk’s filing system. Apart from throwing in a backslash or two there’s not a lot more to be said.
