Foxenden Air Raid Shelter

When the Luftwaffe was escalating its bombing campaigns over southern England in WWII local government was forced into action to provide mass shelters for the local populace. Foxenden, dug into the face of a disused chalk quarry, provided shelter for Guildford residents.

The tunnellers dug deep into the
relatively soft chalk as the long entrance passageway testifies. The shelter was
well organised with marshals keeping
order and medics on hand to provide any
first aid required from posts within the underground complex.

The original wartime signage is still intact
and provides clues as to how the interconnecting tunnels and chambers
were organised and what facilities were provided.
