Fire Devastates
Thursley Nature Reserve

In July 2006 the internationally acclaimed 400 acre nature reserve at Thursley was almost completely destroyed by fire. With European and Ramsar designations, the loss of the reserve together with its rare species of insects and plants shook the wildlife and environmental communities. Here we record the state of the reserve one month on, and already there are signs of plant life renewal.

Nothing survived the intense fire.
Rare species of insects perished along
with slow moving mammals and every scrap
of flora from heather and shrubs to the largest trees.
