Devil's Punch Bowl The campaign to find a solution to overcome the traffic bottleneck at Hindhead by the Devil's Punch Bowl lasted for 30 years. In 2007 the battle was won and construction commenced to build a tunnel under Gibbet Hill. Here we give a tour of the construction site showing the extent of the workings in September 2007 and the efforts being made to limit the effects on the local wildlife. |

The official naming as the 'Hindhead Improvement Scheme' seems to somewhat underplay the importance, complexity and scale of this £371 million project which involves rerouting a key stretch of the busy A3 London to Portsmouth road, excavating twin 1.1 mile (1.8km) long tunnels and constructing six junctions and underpasses over a 4 mile (6.5km) route. The five-plus years of construction activity in this sensitive natural environment will end with a substantial payoff. The Devil's Punch Bowl and large areas of natural habitat in the hills around will be released from the noise and pollution of 21,000 vehicles a day. The people of Hindhead will no longer have to endure gridlock in their village and travellers to and from the coast will no longer have a major bottleneck to contend with. MORE > |
