Right from the start the construction team worked closely with local wildlife and environment groups. The sensitivity of wildlife habitats has been actively taken into account resulting in construction activity working around key breeding, nesting and hibernation patterns of vulnerable species. This has resulted in the construction of seven dormice 'bridges', seen here high above the access roads. Low barriers of plastic sheeting (below) have been installed as movement deterrents in areas where reptiles including adders, grass snakes, slow-worms and lizards are prevalent. The felling of trees during key nesting periods for birds and small mammals was delayed and in some cases completely avoided. MORE > |
