All the timber used is collected locally as part of sustainable woodland management across all hardwood tree species. |
All logs are sorted and sized to suit where in the kiln they are going to be laid. |
It is hot work to manually stack the equivalent of three pick-up truck loads of wood into the kiln. |
Logs are laid side by side leaving a central chimney into which burning cinders will eventually be tipped to start the burn. |
All sizes are slotted in together to make maximum use of the space inside the kiln. |
The kiln is deliberately overfilled to take advantage of the extra space beneath the cone-shaped lid. As the charcoal burns the level will drop by a third. |
