Once red hot, the cinders are carried by shovel . . . . |
. . . . and tipped into the central chimney that was created when the logs were packed tightly into the kiln. The cinders fall to the bottom, and resting on the cone of fines at the core of the kiln provide an intense heat to kick-start the burn. |

It takes strong hands to hoist the lid into position on the kiln. The kiln has a diameter of 7 ft (2.1 m) and needs a proportionately large top. |
