CHARCOAL MAKING PART FOUR

Smoke at last!
The lid will sit proud of the kiln's rim until the logs begin to settle as the fire takes hold. The white smoke is primarily steam at this stage.
Mounting a chimney
Mounting one of the four chimneys.
Settling the lid
Now the lid has dropped to the kiln's rim Ian bangs it shut to ensure a tight fit.
Packing earth on the lid
Earth is now piled on to the rim of the lid . . . .
Ensuring an air-tight earth seal
. . . . and firmed down to ensure a tight seal. The temperature within the kiln will reach between 260-300° celsius.
Air intake port
The intake vents allow a limited and regulated oxygen supply to access the kiln for the combustion process..
