Devil's Punch Bowl
Tunnel

PART FOUR

In addition to the tunnel two major junctions and four underpasses are being built to connect existing roads. The underpass shown here is that at High Pitfold - and alongside, the now closed southbound carriageway of the old A3 here looks eerily deserted.

Just over a mile away is the WWII memorial to servicemen and women who lost their lives in the war. In order to construct an underpass there the construction team have had to move the memorial for temporary safekeeping, which will be resited in time for Canada Day 2008.

97,000 tonnes of asphalt and 3.18 million cubic feet (90,000 cubic metres) of concrete will be used in the construction of the new road.
