Devil's Punch Bowl PART FIVE |
||||
A project of this size involves considerable logistical management juggling the continued daily needs of thousands of motorists, local residents and the natural environment. A temporary new Boundless to Thursley link road has been constructed, and along which traffic is now being diverted, to enable two underpasses at Hindhead Hill and Greensands Way to be built. The redundant stretch of the old A3 that skirts the edge of the Devil's Punchbowl will be covered over and returned to nature. All material excavated during construction is being recycled on site. Felled timber is either being mulched or shipped to wood mills, and around 200,000 new trees and shrubs are being planted in their place. TUNNEL HISTORY HERE |

A public viewing platform has been built nearby above the tunnels and is accessible by footpath. The visitor centre located by the main site office compound is open Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 4.00pm. Many thanks to the Highways Agency and Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering for their permission to photograph on site, and especially to Ian Whyte, Community Relations Manager, for his assistance in preparing this feature. |
